Diploma in Computing and Networking


This course is aimed at students hoping to pursue a career in IT, either as a desktop support or network support personnel and is the ideal starting point. Ideal for people with little or no experience. The course cover aspects of Microsoft Office, Network and Systems support and is used as preparation for the Comptia A+ and N+ examinations.

Course modules

The course comprises the following elements:

ECDL - Using Microsoft Office 2000 to intermediate level. Word-processing, Spreadsheets, Databases, Presentation software, The Windows operating system and file management, Electronic communications.

A+ Certification - A+ certification is an international industry credential that validates the knowledge of computer service technicians with the equivalent of 500 hours of hands-on experience. Major hardware and software companies accept A+ as the standard in foundation-level, vendor-neutral certification for service technicians.

  • Motherboard, processors, and memory
  • Printers and portable computers
  • Diagnosis and troubleshooting
  • Basic networking and telecommunications
  • Safety and preventive maintenance
  • Operating System Technologies
  • Fundamentals-including structure and functions for Windows 9X and Windows 2000
  • File, directory, and disk management
  • Installation, configuration, and upgrading
  • Application device drivers and Windows-based utilities
  • Diagnosis and troubleshooting
  • Internet access and network connectivity

N+ Certification - N+ validates the knowledge of networking professionals with at least nine months of experience in network support or administration or adequate academic training. A typical candidate would have A+ certification or equivalent knowledge.

  • Datalink layer bridges and IEEE 802 specs

  • Transport layer functions, including name resolution
  • TCP/IP fundamentals-protocols, addressing, configuration

  • Remote connectivity
  • Security-from encryption to firewalls
  • Networking Practices
  • Network planning and installation
  • Everyday maintenance-backups, patches, virus protection
  • Troubleshooting scenarios, tools, and tactics

Practical Projects and lab sessions are designed to enable students to apply their knowledge and is included in the programme.

 
Certification
ECDL is tested by on-line examination and is awarded by the British Computer Society. A+ and N+ Certification is by on-line assessment and course work and is awarded by Comptia
