Course Description:

  • In our General English course, we use communicative methodology and blended learning, to provide a varied and engaging course which maximises student progression

  • 16 study hours per week Monday-Friday morning and afternoon classes

    • General English
    8 x 60 minutes per week
    • Computer Labs
    2 x 60 minutes per week
    • Option Class 1
    3 x 60 minutes per week
    • Option Class 2
    3 x 60 minutes per week

  • In General English classes, our tutors will help you progress in all language areas, with a focus on spoken and written production.  Our syllabus is mapped to the Common European Framework of Reference, combining communicative classroom-based lessons and modern technology.

  • In Computer Lab classes, we use up-to-date computer software to provide further language practise so that you can study at your own pace, focusing on individual learning goals, identified in an initial Needs Analysis and ongoing tutorials.

  • You can choose two Option Classes, allowing you to focus on language areas of interest or desired improvement.  Our popular Option Classes include:  Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing and Exam Skills.

  • This course can be offered to students at Beginner level (CEFR A1) through to Upper Advanced level (CEFR C2).

  • Average class size 10-12 (maximum 15 students, minimum 5 students)

  • Minimum age 18

Course Progression:

  • At Intermediate level and above (CEFB1-C2) students can progress onto an Exam Course, an International Foundation Year Programme or one of our many Business, IT or Health and Social Care programmes at MIC.

  • International students outside the EU/EAA require CEFR Level B1 in English (this is the equivalent of IELTS 4.5).

Additional Costs:

  • All Course Materials are included in the course fees.  However, students will be expected to provide stationery and files for their personal use.

  • Students are expected to pay all external examination fees (excluding all NCC examinations).  (The approximate cost for examinations in May 2012 is IELTS - £125, Cambridge Examinations FCE, CAE, CPE - £125  KET, PET - £70.

  • Students are offered free activites Students will be expected to pay reasonable costs to take part in social activities to cover the cost of entrance fees and transportation.

  • You can choose two Option Classes, allowing you to focus on language areas of interest or areas of improvement.  Our popular Option Classes include:  Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing and Exam Skills.
  • This course can be offered to students at Intermediate level (CEFR B1) through to Upper Advanced level (CEFR C2), depending on exam level requirements.

Course Description:

  • Our ESP courses combine General English lessons, focusing on language proficiency in all areas with ESP lessons, designed to develop specific language and professional communication skills, helping students to further their career in positions in which English is used as the international language of communication.

  • Our most popular ESP course is English for Business. 

  • ESP courses are carefully tailored to meet the individual or group’s needs, following a detailed Needs Analysis and consultation.

  • Our tailor-made ESP course comprises of a student-centred, communicative approach. You will be expected to engage in classroom activities, including debates, information gap activities, discussions, role plays, simulations, etc. around topics presented in the course materials and discovered through independent and group research.
  • This course can be offered to students at Intermediate level (CEFR B1) through to Upper Advanced level (CEFR C2).
  • Average class size 10-12 (maximum 15 students, minimum 1 student)

Course Description:

  • We work in partnership with NCC education to provide an Academic Year IFY programme, designed for speakers of English as a foreign language who are seeking to gain entry to UK higher education or selected universities in the USA and Australia.

  • Our IFY programme combines General English lessons with lectures and seminars in 6 different disciplines.  Students are also expected to do at least 12 hours of self-study per week.

  • On successful completion of the course, students receive the International Foundation Year certificate awarded by NCC Education (UK NQF Level 3).

  • All Lessons are Monday-Friday with morning and afternoon classes

    • Term 1 -  16 x 60 minutes per week
    • Term 2 – 24 x 60 minutes per week
    • Term 3 – 26 x 60 minutes per week

  • The IFY course comprises of 9 modules:

    • English Language (3 modules Terms 1, 2 + 3 - 70 credits)

    • Mathematical Techniques (Term 2 - 10 credits)

    • IT Skills (Term 2 - 10 credits)

    • Study and Communication Skills (Term 3 - 20 credits)

    • Culture Studies (Term 3 - 10 credits)

    • Introduction to Business (Term 3 - 10 credits)

    • Accounting and Economics (Term 3 - 10 credits)

  • As part of the IFY programme, you will study English language at three stages - Intermediate (CEFR B1 (NCC Level 3) - Term 1), Upper-Intermediate (CEFR B2 (NCC Level 4) in Term 2) and Advanced (CEFR C1 (NCC Level 5) in Term 3).  Our syllabus combines communicative classroom-based lessons, modern technology and exam training and techniques to prepare students for the NCC exams at the end of each English module.

  • In Term 2 and Term 3, students attend lectures, seminars and practical workshops in 6 different disciplines.  Course content is assessed by examination and assignments. Please see IFY Course Content Information.

  • Average class size 10-12 (maximum 15 students, minimum 5 students)

  • Minimum age 18

Course Progression:

  • On successful completion of the course, students are eligible to apply for first year entry at one of the many universities which recognise the IFY programme, can continue their studies on the next stage of the NCC Education Degree Journey or apply for one of our many Business, IT or Health and Social Care programmes at MIC. Course Content Information

The International Foundation Year course comprises of 9 modules and course content is assessed by examination and assignments.  Students need to pass all 9 modules to successfully complete the course and receive the International Foundation Year certificate awarded by NCC Education (UK NQF Level 3).  The table below gives further information about all 9 modules, credits, assessment type and course fit.

Mathematical Techniques

Students develop their basic mathematical competence and skills through lectures, tutorials and seminars.  This module prepares students for the Introduction to Business and the Accounting and Economics modules later in the course.

Students are introduced to the purpose, type and organisation of business and to organisation and management theories through a combination of lectures and seminars.

Students get a solid grounding in the key principles of accounting and economics through a combination of lectures and tutorials.  Topics covered include buyer and seller behaviour, the banking system, financial statements and annual reports.
